About the Author, the Clan of the Dragon, and this Website

Okay, you wanted to know a little bit about me or else you wouldn't have clicked on the "about the author" link. I've always been hesitant about putting one of these pages up because I've never really known just what to say.   I guess I should just start and see where it goes.

I am J'Karrah, also known as J'Karrah EbonDragon online.  I also used to go by Kerowyn J'Karrah SilverDrake many years ago.  The changes in name reflect periods of growth I have experienced and the changes in outlook that were the result.  I have been Pagan for the past 22 years and a priestess of Morrigan for 15.  I don't follow any particular tradition of Paganism except my own, being self taught, and that works for me.  Even before becoming a Pagan and Witch dragons were a big part of my life.   The fascination I had for them is what I believe sparked the interest of my first and oldest dragon companion when I was in my teens, long before discovering the Pagan path I now walk.

Coming from a small mid-western farming town pretty much meant any one interested in "weird shit" like dragons and magic was on their own.   As a result my personal style of both worship and magic are very... basic.   My favorite types of spell work involves combining colored  candles and runes with directed energy and concentrated will.  I really don't have much use for all the bells and whistles of formal, ritualized worship or spell casting.  It's not that I have anything against them, or that I don't know how to go the whole "formal ritual" route.  I do upon occasion if I feel directed to do so, or when I am working with others but generally I think the "keep it simple" method is most effective and efficient for me when practicing on my own.

Now, I know what you are thinking.  "What about all of the formal rituals on this site?"  Well, there is a reason for that.  As I mentioned on the opening page this website is intended to be something of a teaching site.  Its primary focus is to help people who are new to the concept of magic and all the things that go into it.  I have found over the years that most people just starting on the magical path lack confidence that magic can actually be very simple and still be effective.  The formal rituals are intended to help build confidence one step at a time.  By presenting detailed instructions and using the tools and incantations it is easier for the inexperienced practitioner to fully engage both the conscious and subconscious minds in the spell being cast.  They help to put them into a magical frame of mind where anything is possible, and that is when the magic happens!

But why use a basic Wiccan format if I'm not Wiccan?  Because, when the Clan of the Dragon was first formed it was in response to a group of friends who were interested in learning to work magically with dragons.  They were had been trained in the Wiccan style of magic and that is what they were comfortable with.  So when they asked me to help them learn to work with dragons we kept with the magical format they were most comfortable with.  Also, with the prevalence of so many books on Wiccan and Wiccan based ritual practice on the market today, it is a good chance that people looking into this site have read at least a couple of Wiccan oriented books and will be at least familiar with the basic magical concepts.  By keeping to the standard Wiccan ritual format, there is some measure of continuity with what they have learned so far.  Again this is to help build experience and confidence for the novice magical practitioner.  Hopefully, as they gain experience and grow in confidence... both in themselves and in their dragon companions, those who start out on this website will branch out on their own.  Experiment, and delve into the deeper mysteries their dragon companions have to teach them.

Now you may be wondering just who, or what, is the Clan of the Dragon? It’s really very simple. Several years ago there was a group of friends who were interested in both Dragons and magic. As this group of friends was also Pagans and Wiccans, they also were interested in incorporating “draconic” energies into their magical rites, but none of them really knew how to go about it. Well, one of those people was a friend of mine and she knew of my connection to Dragons and that I worked with them on a regular basis. So she asked if I would help them to do this. The result was the Clan of the Dragon, and our style of working we began to call the “Draconic Tradition.”   (That used to be unique some twelve years ago as far as we knew, but now it seems there are several different groups also using the term. It’s pretty cool, actually, because it means that knowledge of and respect for Dragons is returning to the world. As for which group was first... who knows? And more to the point... if they are truly interested in bringing knowledge of and respect for Dragons back into the world... who cares?)

Here you will find many of the rituals and spells used in magical practice by members of the Clan of the Dragon still to this day. Eventually, after about 6 years working together, the original members of the Clan of the Dragon drifted apart as events in our lives drew us in different directions.   Very few groups, magical or otherwise in this day and age stay together forever as they were originally formed.  College, jobs, and family obligations often dictate otherwise.  Original members leave to form new groups elsewhere or to peruse a solitary path, and new members come in.  As time passed it was decided that the information I had originally written for the  Clan of the Dragon might be of interest to those outside our small circle and I published the first Clan of the Dragon Website on Geocities in October of 2001.  It was moved here in June of 2008.

My purpose here is help people interested in learning to work with dragons to get started on the path.  Once someone  successfully starts walking that path, it is up to them and their dragon companions to walk it in their own unique way, to build upon what they have learned here, and to eventually surpass it.  I only hope that when that time comes and they look back on what they learned from this website they will do so fondly...
